Guide to Buying Reusable Coffee Cups

In this quick guide, I’ll cover the different aspects you need to consider when purchasing a reusable coffee cup.

It will give you an idea of the different options out there and what you should seek out or avoid, ensuring you don’t end up wasting your money.

1. Material Matters

Consider what the cup is made of. Your options generally include ceramic, glass, stainless steel, and plastic.

Each material has its advantages and drawbacks.

Here’s a summary of things you need to be aware of:

  1. Glass: If you prefer to see your coffee, glass cups are a fantastic option. They’re sleek, non-porous, and won’t affect the taste. Just be cautious with potential breakage.
  2. Ceramic: These cups are known for their excellent heat retention and durability. They can be stylish and are often microwave and dishwasher safe. Ceramic is a sustainable choice as it’s made from natural materials like clay, which won’t affect the taste of your coffee.
  3. Bamboo: For those who want to keep it natural, bamboo cups are lightweight, biodegradable, and trendy. They’re perfect for cold drinks and the occasional hot brew.
  4. Silicone: Flexible and collapsible, silicone cups are a space-saving dream. They are often easy to clean and maintain. They’re a great choice for travellers.
  5. Plastic: Plastic is durable and long-lasting. Look for BPA-free options to stay healthy and eco-friendly.
  6. Stainless Steel: Durable and long-lasting, stainless steel cups are ideal for hot and cold drinks. They won’t absorb flavours and are easy to clean. Plus, they’re often BPA-free.

No one material type is better than another – it’s a matter of personal preferences.

This blog post provides a review of glass, ceramic and bamboo coffee cups only. This is because they are the most popular and sought-after material types – glass and ceramic, because they do not interfere with the taste of your coffee, bamboo because people see this as the most environmentally friendly option.

Mind you, the best reusable coffee cup out there is made from something entirely different. More on this below.

2. Size and Capacity

Are you a double espresso devotee, a latte lover, or just a small black coffee sipper? The cup’s size and capacity are crucial. Make sure it comfortably holds your usual coffee order.

The size of a small, medium, and large coffee in Australia can vary between different coffee shops and regions, but here are approximate sizes in millilitres (ml) for these commonly used terms:

  1. Small: In Australia, a small coffee is typically around 220-240 ml (7.4-8.1 ounces).
  2. Medium: A medium coffee is usually in the range of 340-360 ml (11.5-12.2 ounces).
  3. Large: The size of a large coffee can vary more widely, but it often falls within the range of 450-500 ml (15.2-16.9 ounces).

If your coffee order varies, purchase the largest size you tend to drink.

For me, the small size is best. I often drink a piccolo and sometimes a small cappuccino. Baristas have no problem using the small coffee cup to serve me a piccolo – they fill it part way as needed.

3. Lid Type and Leakproof Features

Reusable coffee cups with lids are an essential element since your cup will be taken out and about. But not all lids are created equal.

If you are going to find an issue with anything, it will be the lid.

A well-designed lid must be drip-proof, allowing for smooth, drip-free sipping. That is a must for all products listed in this blog post.

Some cups come with innovative designs that make them spill-resistant, even when knocked over. These designs often feature a strategically placed drinking spout that minimizes the risk of leaks.

Ideally, your lid will contain minimal parts, so it’s easy to clean.

And it will provide a large enough opening to allow you to enjoy your coffee. Ideally it will be designed so you can take a sip without your nose getting in the way!

I have to admit, even among the best of the best that I have listed below, the lids can be a bit of a letdown. Being drip-proof is a must but the rest of the features mentioned aren’t always present in every cup.

Any issues with the cups mentioned below, I have pointed them out.

You may find lid design is something you may need to compromise on, after working out what matters to you.

For myself, I prefer easy cleaning so a lid with minimal parts is important to me. A good opening to sip the coffee is placed last – if the opening sucks, I will take the lid off to drink my coffee. I’m okay with that little inconvenience.

4. Insulation

If you enjoy sipping slowly or have a long commute, look for cups with good insulation. Double-walled designs can keep your coffee hot for longer, making them ideal for those who enjoy leisurely coffee breaks.

Insulation and the cup’s ability to retain heat is also closely related to the material used – stainless steel being the best at retaining heat, as well as glass and ceramics to a lesser extent.

All reusable cups perform better than standard disposable paper cups so matter what you choose you’re winning there!

5. Ease of Cleaning

No one wants to spend time cleaning their coffee cup. So opt for a cup that’s easy to disassemble and clean.

Many cups are dishwasher-safe, which can be a time-saver.

6. Eco-Friendly Credentials

If sustainability is a top priority for you, consider cups made from eco-friendly materials, such as recycled plastics. Also, check if the cup is recyclable at the end of its life cycle.

7. Aesthetic Appeal

Your reusable coffee cup is an extension of your style. Don’t compromise on aesthetics. Whether you prefer sleek and modern, classic, or quirky designs, choose a cup that speaks to you.

8. Brand Reputation

Do a bit of research on the brand. Choose one with a reputation for quality, durability, and commitment to sustainability. Check out reviews from other users to get a sense of the product’s performance.

The products I have selected below (with some exceptions) have been based on feedback I have received from others, as well as my own experience in using these products. Many are from well-known brands that live up to their reputation.

9. Portability

Consider how you’ll carry your cup. Some cups come with easy-to-hold grips, while others fit neatly into cup holders in your car. Some are quite bulky while others can be light and collapsable.

Think about your daily routine and what is important to you. Finding a cup that ticks all the boxes is near impossible but once you decide what is important to you, the decision is a lot easier to make.

10. Cafe Friendliness

Ensure the opening of your cup is wide enough to be used in standard coffee machines and short enough to fit underneath them as well.

Some cups may not fit beneath coffee dispensers, leading to inconvenience or spillage.

I find this is only an issue if you are trying to use a cup that is not purpose-built for coffee. For example, if you try to use a thermos cup – if it’s not the right height or width, your barista won’t be able to use your cup.

In my review of coffee cups, I have taken many of these aspects into account, noting both what’s to like about these cups as well as what’s not to like – the perfect cup does not exist and each does have its drawbacks.

As noted above, work out what is important to you and that will help you decide which of the cups listed below is best for you.

Best Reusable Coffee Cup – Overall

Huskee Coffee Cup – Original

The best reusable coffee cup in Australia would have to be the Huskee Coffee Cup. It’s a notable contender in the world of reusable coffee cups and it’s gaining attention for its innovative design and eco-friendly approach. Here’s a closer look at what makes the Huskee Coffee Cup stand out:

Eco-Friendly Material: One of the standout features of the Huskee Coffee Cup is its unique construction. These cups are made from coffee husks, which are a natural byproduct of coffee milling. By repurposing this waste material, Huskee not only reduces waste but also creates a durable, heat-retaining cup with a distinctive speckled texture.

Of course, it is not made from coffee husks alone – it is a composite product that also uses polypropylene. However half of the product is made from coffee husks, while the other half is made from BPA free food grade recycled plastic.

Thermal Performance: The unique composition of the cup’s material, combined with its thick walls, helps to retain heat, so your coffee stays hotter for longer.

Universal Lids: The Huskee Coffee Cup comes with a universal lid that fits every cup size within its range. This means you can easily replace lids if needed. It’s tapered design allows you to get a good sip of coffee.

Ergonomic Design: The cup is designed with a comfortable grip and easy-to-hold surface, making it ideal for both quick coffee runs and leisurely sips. The cup’s surface stays cool to the touch, so there’s no need to worry about burning your hands.

Stylish Aesthetic: Huskee Coffee Cups have a unique, modern look with their speckled texture and minimalist design. They are available in two earthy colours (charcoal and natural), making them a stylish accessory for your coffee routine.

Capacity: Huskee offers cups in different sizes, including 6 oz, 8 oz, and 12 oz, catering to a range of preferences and coffee volumes.

Maintenance: The Huskee Coffee Cup is dishwasher safe, making it easy to clean and maintain.

End of Life: Return your cup to Huskee or at one of their swap sites and they can recycle the product at the end of its life.

In summary, the Huskee Coffee Cup is a solid choice for those looking for an eco-friendly, stylish, and heat-retaining reusable coffee cup.

Best Glass Reusable Coffee Cup

So I have never understood why glass reusable coffee cups are so popular – it’s just a nightmare product for a clutz like me!

There is a version that uses a cork sleeve instead of plastic. This makes the cup much easier to hold.

I used to have one of the cork Keep Cups and I loved how it looked. However, it was not dishwasher-friendly and the cork wore away in next to no time.

But it’s an option to consider. Click here to check the price and read more reviews.

Best Ceramic Coffee Cups

Ceramic cups have gained a special place in the hearts of coffee lovers and eco-conscious individuals alike. These cups combine the love for artisanal design with the commitment to reducing single-use waste. And more so than glass, ceramics will not interfere with the taste of your coffee, which is a bonus for true coffee lovers.

Here are some options to consider if you are after ceramic reusable coffee cups. I’ve chosen these because they come highly recommended and/or they are produced by brands with a strong reputation for quality.

These options are not purely ceramic – the inside of the cups are ceramic while the outer layer is made from stainless steel.

This is the best combination I could find for ceramic cups because the cup is just too fragile otherwise. It’s a way to combine the best of both worlds – ceramics, which give you the best tasting coffee and stainless steel, which can keep your coffee hotter for longer.

Fellow Carter Everywhere Mug

Elevate your on-the-go coffee experience with the Fellow Carter Everywhere Mug.

It features a ceramic coating inside the cup that ensures your coffee tastes exactly as you intended, free from any lingering odours or unwanted flavours, and without any “old penny” aftertastes.

The 304 18/8 double-wall vacuum-insulated stainless steel construction maintains your beverage’s temperature, keeping it hot for up to 12 hours or refreshingly cold for up to 24 hours.

The mug-inspired mouth not only allows you to savour the full aroma of your coffee but also helps you gauge the temperature before you take that first sip. Plus, with Carter’s leak-proof seal and a quick twist locking lid, you can trust that your bag will stay dry, offering peace of mind when you’re on the move.

What’s to like

  • looks premium
  • keeps your coffee warm
  • doesn’t spoil the taste of your coffee
  • durable and does not break easily
  • great grip
  • easy to wash

What’s not to like

  • while drip-proof, it’s not completely leakproof
  • the lid can be a little tricky to open because of the lack of traction
  • may not fit your cup holders

The W&P Porter Ceramic Mug is designed to enhance your daily sipping experience. Available in a selection of appealing colours, this mug not only enhances the taste of your coffee but also complements your style at home or on the go.

Crafted from premium, food-grade materials such as durable ceramic with a silicone wrap and a BPA-free press-fit lid, it’s the ideal alternative to disposable cups and metal to-go mugs.

The press-fit lid secures your drink and is designed to reduce splashes. The mug is also conveniently designed to fit in most car cup holders.

Cleaning and reheating is effortless – you can easily warm your drink in the microwave (just be careful, it can get hot!). You can hand-wash or toss the cup in the dishwasher for quick cleaning.

What’s to like

  • soft silicone wrapping is nice to hold
  • cleans well in the dishwasher
  • microwaveable

What’s not to like

  • not leak proof
  • it is not insulated so the cup can get very hot to the touch
  • and it does not hold heat for long

Okay, this doesn’t sound so great since it fails in some fundamental aspects. But it looks so good!

W&P does have an insulated version that is worthwhile considering if you don’t mind a larger version (12 oz). Check out this option here

Best Bamboo Reusable Coffee Cup

Bamboo coffee cups have become a symbol of sustainable living and conscious consumer choices. Bamboo is also durable and stylish, adding to its popularity.

When I started looking into bamboo sunglasses, it became apparent that bamboo is not as low impact as people perceive it to be. It all depends on where the bamboo is sourced.

To learn more, check out this blog post.

While each of the brands mentioned above claim to be eco-friendly, there was no way to verify this online as thre were no details about certifactions or where the bamboo was sourced.

But if avoiding plastic is important to you and you like the look and feel of bamboo, this provides you with some options to consider.

When selecting your ideal reusable takeaway coffee cup consider the material, size, lid quality, thermal performance, ease of maintenance and of course, how you want it to look.

Reusable takeaway coffee cups have become an essential tool for those who seek to enjoy their favourite brew without contributing to the ever-mounting pile of disposable cups.

Its a small thing but through these conscious choices, we can collectively work towards a more sustainable future 🌎
