Where to Buy Eco Friendly T Shirts in Australia

This post was last updated in 2024
Hello there my eco-conscious warriors 😊
When it comes to updating your wardrobe with sustainable essentials, eco-friendly t shirts are a great place to start. Whether you’re looking for a classic white tee, a relaxed oversized fit, or something with a pop of colour, there are plenty of eco-friendly brands across Australia and New Zealand that are creating stylish, conscious clothing.
If you are looking to buy eco friendly t shirts look for organic and eco-friendly fabrics like hemp or Tencel, non-toxic dyes, and ethical production with certifications like Fair Trade or GOTS. In this blog post you will find more than 20 Australian and New Zealand eco friendly brands that tick one or more of these boxes.
Also covered in this blog post are some of the additional points I kept in mind when coming up with this list and some tips on caring for your tees. Here are links to sections within this blog post:
My usual disclaimer – are these brands 100% perfectly sustainable? I highly doubt it. I based this list on the brands stated commitments on their websites on ethical practices and transparency in supply chains, the materials they use and general operational practices. The main focus was the materials used – here you will find companies that use organic cotton, hemp, bamboo or Tencel. In many cases, the materials used were GOTS certified. And I relied on the Good on You ratings, which I have also noted below. Check out their website because its a great reference to discover eco friendly clothing brands.

What Makes a T-Shirt Eco-Friendly
Not all T-shirts are created equal, and when it comes to sustainability, there are a few key factors to keep in mind:
- Organic & Sustainable Fabrics – Look for organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, or Tencel. These materials are grown and produced with minimal environmental impact.
- Non-Toxic Dyes & Processes – Many conventional clothing brands use harsh chemicals. Opt for brands that use low-impact or plant-based dyes.
- Ethical Production – Check for certifications like Fair Trade, GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), or B Corp to ensure fair wages and safe working conditions.
- Local & Transparent Supply Chains – Brands that manufacture in Australia or New Zealand (or source responsibly) help reduce emissions and support local economies. Not many tick this box but Citizen World and Dharma Bums manufacture in Australia and quite a few of the New Zealand brands also manufacture locally.
- Durability & Circular Fashion – High-quality T-shirts last longer, reducing waste. Some brands even offer take-back or recycling programs like Little Yellow Bird, Kowtow, Untouched World and Icebreaker.
How to Care for Your Eco-Friendly T-Shirts
Sustainability doesn’t end at checkout—how you care for your clothing matters too. To keep your T-shirts looking fresh and lasting longer:
- Wash in Cold Water – Hot water fades colours and breaks down fibres faster.
- Use Eco-Friendly Detergent – Choose a biodegradable option free from harsh chemicals.
- Air Dry Instead of Using a Dryer – It saves energy and extends the life of your tees.
- Repair & Repurpose – A small hole? Stitch it up instead of tossing it out.
One thing I have struggled with for the longet time was keeping my whites white and looking fresh. I finally got around looking into natual bleach recipes and put a list of them together in this blog post: How to Whiten Clothes With Bleach – Naturally! The best thing about the blog post if you are Australian is that all recipes are in metric units – its so hard to find those online!
And if you want to see the results of me testing out these recipes, check out this blog post: The Best Natural Laundry Soaker Recipe – Plus Alternatives
With so many amazing Australian and New Zealand brands leading the way, finding high-quality, stylish, and ethically made shirts has never been easier. Whether you’re after everyday basics or something a little more elevated, there’s an option for everyone and this blog post shows that.
Switching to eco-friendly T-shirts is an easy and impactful way to embrace sustainable fashion. t is through these conscious choices, we can collectively work towards a more sustainable future 🌎
