Eco Friendly Laundry Stain Remover Options in Australia

This post was last updated in 2025
Hello there my eco-conscious warriors 😊
Let’s be real — laundry isn’t the most glamorous topic, but it’s something we all do. And if you’ve ever spilled turmeric on your favourite top or wrestled grass stains out of school uniforms, you know a good stain remover is a laundry-day lifesaver. But here’s the thing: traditional clothes stain removers are often packed with ingredients that aren’t so great for our skin, our homes, or the environment.
That’s why I’ve made the switch to eco-friendly laundry stain removers. I began by exploring various DIY stain remover recipes and found that natural stain removers work really well. You can check out my blog post on this linked here.
However I know DIY is not always everyone’s thing – heck, sometimes I can’t even be bothered. So I thought I would look into off-the-shelf stain removers.
There are several eco-friendly laundry stain removers available in Australia from stain remover sticks, powders that can turned into stain-busting sprays, to laundry soakers with super stain removal power. The most economical option is stain sticks, as you will find in this blog post.
In this blog post, I get into why you should make the switch to eco-friendly alternatives and what you should look out for. I’ve listed all the eco-friendly stain removers available in Australia, noting their key ingredients, current pricing, a summary of product reviews and where you can find them. I have provided a cost-per-use comparison to help you make an economical, as well as eco-friendly choice, as well as a summary of my own experience using some of these products.

Let’s get into it 🚀
Why Switch to an Eco-Friendly Laundry Stain Remover?
Most conventional stain removers rely on:
- Harsh bleaches
- Optical brighteners
- Synthetic fragrances
- Petroleum-derived ingredients
- Phosphates and surfactants that can pollute waterways
While they may lift stains, they also leave residue on your clothes and contribute to water pollution — not to mention they can irritate sensitive skin, especially for little ones.
By choosing eco-friendly alternatives, you’re:
✨ Protecting your family’s health
🌱 Supporting sustainable Aussie businesses
💧 Keeping our oceans, rivers, and soils clean
🧼 Still getting amazing results (yes, really!)
What to Look for in a Good Eco-Friendly Stain Remover
Here’s a little checklist to keep in mind when shopping for a stain remover that’s good for the planet. Look out for:
✅ Plant-based or naturally derived ingredients
✅ No synthetic fragrances or dyes
✅ Biodegradable and septic/greywater safe
✅ Cruelty-free
✅ Refillable or recyclable packaging
✅ Made in Australia (when possible!)

Cost Comparison
What I like to do when looking at products is look at how much they cost. It seems silly when these aren’t expensive items but when it comes to something I use on a semi-regular basis, I don’t want to be paying more than I have to. And frankly you have to be careful in the eco-friendly market – the prices can vary widly, with no discernable different in product quality.
So below you will find my estimate of cost per use. Some assumptions had to be made when it comes to usage – perhaps some mistakes may have been made there, but I don’t think I am too far off.
Hands down stain sticks are your most economical option, because I have assumed almost unlimited use. I really think they are of unlimited use based on my own experience – you don’t need to use much to get stains out. The stick I have has lasted me FOREVER and I still have a good part of it left. And as you will see in the next section, they work.
The next best is the Bloody Awesome brand, however this doesn’t have the best reviews as you would have read above. The next best after that is the Koala brand, which I have not tried out myself but the reviews are really good.
My Experience Using Eco-Friendly Stain Removers
Okay, I’ve only tried out two products – Kin Kin and Eco Store – and my at home experiments aren’t the most scientific or comprehensive. But thought I would share anyway.
The upshot – I found both products to be equally effective. It is possible the stains I had weren’t too much of a challenge but I don’t think that is it – these results are similar to other experiments I have tried.
I tried a range of natural bleach recipes on various really tough stains and found DIY recipes to be as equally effective as any other laundry soaker out there. So I’m not surprised these eco-friendly off-the-shelf soakers work just as well. See below for some dodgy photos of my experiments.
Before getting to that, I wanted to show the results from something else I also tried. I used my stain stick to remove the stain you see in the photo below. It was not the That Red House or Tuffy stain remover stick I note above but another stain remover stick that I have had for years and years, so long that I don’t even know what brand it is. And I have to tell you, these stain remover sticks really work.
Not sure if this is the right away to use it but I rub it on the stain with a little water and then chuck the item in the wash.
All stains I tested here are ones that would not come out in a normal wash so they definately needed this extra treatment.

Here are the results from my little Kin Kin and Eco Store experiment.
This is from using Kin Kin (I know the photos have Eco Store pictured in them but that was a mixup on my part – I’m hopeless at this!):

The one above looks like it didn’t work completely but that’s just poor photo taking on my part – there really is no stain left on the top.
And here are the photos from the Eco Store experiment (again a mixup in the photos – I promise you I used Eco Store on these tops):

While I have not tried everything on the list, based on the online reviews and these small experiments, I have no reason to believe the eco-friendly options listed earlier would not work. The only one I have concerns about is the Bloody Awesome Stain & Odour Remover Powder, because of the poor reviews.
A Few More Tips for Greener Laundry Days
Here are some general tips to keep in mind if your clothing gets stained:
- Act fast: The sooner you treat a stain, the better!
- Cold water first: Hot water can set stains, especially protein-based ones like blood.
- Sunshine is your secret weapon: It naturally whitens and freshens (just don’t overdo it on colours!).
- Pre-soak in vinegar and water for older or stubborn stains.
If you want to know more, there is a heap of information online.
My personal tip – check out the video below by Rajiv Surendra. Some points are summarised above but in this video, he covers everything that’s worth knowing about getting rid of stains.
Or keep it simple and choose one of the products mentioned in this blog post.
Whether you DIY it or are inspired by this blog post to support an Aussie brand, you’ll feel better knowing your clothes are clean without all the hidden nasties.
Give one of these a try and let me know how you go — or if you’ve got a stain-removing secret weapon I need to know about, let me know in the comments.
Switching to an eco friendly laundry stain remover is one of the easiest ways to make your home more sustainable and it is through these conscious choices, we can collectively work towards a more sustainable future 🌎
