List of the Best Green Energy Providers in Australia

This post was last updated in 2025
Hello there my eco-conscious warriors 😊
When it comes to cutting your carbon footprint, switching to a green energy provider is one of the most powerful steps you can take. But here’s the catch – it is not always clear which of the energy providers out there are “green”.
While some companies invest in renewable projects and back Australia’s transition to clean energy, others still have links to coal, oil or gas — even if they offer a so-called “green” plan and appear to support clean energy. If you want to ensure your money is not supporting the fossil fuel industry, you want to choose an energy provider that has close to zero ties with the fossil fuel energy market. I have found these companies and I am sharing my list of green energy providers here.
These companies do not support the fossil fuel industry, meaning no investment in coal or gas infrastructure, and no parent companies with dirty ties. These are the true clean energy champions, and they deserve a closer look:
Click on the links above to learn a little bit more about each of these companies.
To be clear, signing up with these companies does not mean the electricity provided to you will be 100% green. Unfortunately, for most of Australia, the only way to get more green energy in your life is to generate it yourself through solar. To learn more about this, read this blog post: What to Look Out for When Choosing a Green Energy Retailer.
The best you can aim for is to choose an energy provider that has no ties to companies that generate energy through fossil fuels. That way, the fees you pay for electricity and the profit generated from that do not go to supporting businesses that are unnecessarily polluting our planet.
That was the main criteria that was applied when coming up with the list above – ensuring the energy provider does not have ties to companies that generate energy through fossil fuels.
How did I come up with the list?
As mentioned, I relied on information from Greenpeace to come up with this list.
Greenpeace had previously published a Green Electricity Guide. They had looked at over 40 providers and obtained information about the ties these companies had with fossil fuel companies.
Unfortunately, this guide is no longer publicly available, so I am unable to link to it. But luckily, I downloaded the information back in 2024, and I was able to rely on this to come up with the list above.
From their list of 40 + companies, I excluded those with known ties to fossil fuel companies. For those that were left, I searched for information online to see if they checked off one of the boxes in my checklist of what makes a green energy provider (I’ve summarised this checklist below or you can read more in this blog post: What to Look Out for When Choosing a Green Energy Retailer).
From this online search, I found companies that had ceased operations, so they were removed from the list. And other companies did not tick any other boxes on the checklist I had, so they were removed from the list.
And I was left with the shortlist for this blog post.
To help you choose a green energy company, here’s a summary of the different providers and the states in which they are available:
Or keep reading to learn a little more.
Diamond Energy
A long-time frontrunner in clean energy, Diamond Energy generates its own electricity from renewables like solar, wind, and biogas, and supports small-scale solar producers across Australia.
🌱 Why they’re green: Independently owned, no fossil fuel ties, and supplies renewable power from their own generation assets.
📍 Available in: NSW, VIC, QLD, SA.
⚡ Plans: Standard electricity plans, carbon neutral, with GreenPower options available.
Energy Locals
Energy Locals is all about doing things differently — they don’t profit from how much energy you use, and they work with community organisations to support solar and battery programs.
🌱 Why they’re green: No fossil fuel links, carbon neutral by default, supports local clean energy initiatives like Indigo Power and CoPower.
📍 Available in: NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, ACT, TAS.

One extra provider…
Since the Greenpeace list of reviewed companies was almost a year old, I searched for energy providers not covered in the Greenpeace review.
Using the Canstar Blue electricity guide, the two companies below were noted as players in the market; however, based on publicly available information, these are not companies worth considering:
- Kogan Energy – their business practices as a whole in the retail market are not of the kind you would want to support, so I have ruled this company out, even if it does not have ties to fossil fuel energy generators.
- Engie – the parent company has ties to the natural gas industry
One provider I did find in my review of providers listed on Canstar was Pacific Blue. Here’s more info on this one:
Pacific Blue
Pacific Blue is a fully renewable energy retailer owned by State Power Investment Corporation, one of the world’s largest clean energy companies. In Australia, Pacific Blue owns and operates wind farms and hydroelectric power stations, and they supply electricity directly from their own renewable generation assets.
🌱 Why they’re green: They generate 100% of the electricity they sell from wind and hydro, with no fossil fuel involvement.
📍 Available in: VIC, SA, NSW (limited to some business and residential customers — expanding slowly).
⚡ Plans: Residential and business electricity plans, carbon-neutral and GreenPower plans are offered
It is a long list of energy providers here. Not all companies are perfect in their practices, and more could be considered more “green” than others.
The companies listed here are ones that have zero ties to companies that generate energy from fossil fuels. And I also looked for at least one of the other elements in the list below:
Asset ownership
- The parent company (or any owner of the company) does not extract, transport or generate power from fossil fuels.
- They own renewable energy assets, or the parent company owns assets that generate renewable energy.
Market position
- They actively take the position that coal-fired power sources should be phased out of our market.
- They promote energy efficiency.
- They support technology that allows for small-scale/ local electricity generation.
Pricing
- Supports localised energy production and community involvement
- Promotes demand management (more on this in another post)
- They offer high solar feed-in tariffs to encourage households to go solar. Energy use
- They offset their own energy use
Products offered
- They offer carbon-neutral energy
- They offer GreenPower energy (more about this in this blog post)
Some of the companies listed above tick more than one of these boxes, which is ideal. It would be hard to find one that ticks all the boxes.
Choosing a truly green energy provider in Australia isn’t always as straightforward as it should be, but it is possible, and my hope is that this blog post makes things easier for you.
By switching to a provider that doesn’t support the fossil fuel industry, you’re not just making a personal change—you’re helping to shift demand toward a cleaner energy future. Every dollar we spend on power is a vote for the kind of world we want to live in and it is through these conscious choices, we can collectively work towards a more sustainable future 🌎
