Fortunately, this is one area where many brands are rising to the occasion, producing not only ethical jeans but also jeans made using sustainable denim.
Below is a list of brands that use sustainable denim or have adopted sustainable practices in production processes. The options are not limited to just a few – there is a wide range of options, offering varying styles and sizes, all available in Australia. But if I had to recommend one I would go for Nudie Jeans. The brands I have listed in this blog post aren’t perfect by any means but the majority of them have gone to great lengths to move away from traditional, harmful practices. But there are one or two brands* listed here whose efforts are tokenistic at best but I have included them because buying sustainably made products from these brands sends an important signal to these brands. Don’t rule them out completely.
And if you are after ethical jeans you are in luck as many of those listed for their sustainable practices also produce ethical jeans. These brands ensure strong worker rights, fair wages and transparent supply chains. But again, not all on the list fit this brief**.

As a major brand, I was surprised to find they had a “It’s a start” rating on the Good on You website, in particular calling out its efforts to manage water use.

Neuw Denim focuses on sustainable fabrics and ethical production. They utilise water-saving techniques and are committed to reducing the environmental footprint of their denim production. The brand ensures fair labour practices throughout its supply chain.
I have two jeans from this brand and I LOVE THEM. They’re both mom jeans bought more than 2 years ago and they have held up really well. Especially considering I only have two pairs of jeans in total in my wardrobe and jeans are essentially all I wear.
The fit is amazing, I’m a size 12 so fit can be tricky with me but I have no issues with these jeans. They have a slight stretch and such high quality – couldn’t be happier.
